چکیده

Examination.-The visual acuity in the right eye was 6/4 and that in the left 6/6. The right eye was moderately injected and examination revealed a very fine perforating wound of the cornea at 3 o'clock about 4 mm. in from the limbus. The slit lamp showed but few cells in the anterior chamber. The pupil dilated freely, the lens and vitreous were both clear, and no intra-ocular foreign body was visible. The left eye was normal on full ocular examination. Routine x rays showed the presence of an opaque minute intra-ocular foreign body in the right eye and this was then localized with a corneo-scleral ring. The foreign body could not be seen in the postero-anterior view, as its minute shadow was hidden behind that of the ring itself (Fig. 1). It was only by tilting the eye out of a true postero-anterior view that the foreign body was visible immediately adjacent to the ring (Fig. 2). No difficulty was encountered in locating the position of the foreign body in the lateral view. Localization was determined on these films and the scleral incision was made 2 mm. behind the limbus and 3 mm. from the mid-line where the foreign body was thought to lie in the ciliary body. After repeated unsuccessful attempts at removal with a magnet (Newton Victor P.M.X. Ophthalmic Magnet), the patient was returned to the ward for further localization.

Unusual case of intraocular foreign body.

A patient who recently came under my care had been struck in the right eye by a foreign body whilst hammering a piece of steel with hammer and cold chisel. A diagnosis of intra-ocular foreign body was made, there being a small entrance wound in the centre of the cornea and an opaque lens. This diagnosis was confirmed by x ray. The foreign body, measuring about 3j x 1 x 1 mm. was located in the ...

Choosing Sutures in Small Animal Surgery

Sutures role in wound repair process is to provide hemostasis and support for healing tissue [1-6]. Different tissues have differing requirements for suture support because they heal at different rates. Some tissues need support for only a few days (e.g. muscle, subcutaneous tissue, skin), whereas others require weeks (fascia) or even months (tendon) to heal. Patient variations further affect s...

Bioinspired Implant Materials Befuddle Bacteria

T he use of biomaterials for implants or medical devices stretches back 35,000 years, when sutures were used to close large wounds. The Greeks and Chinese used gold in dental restorations 2,000 years ago. However, since World War II, all manner of materials have found use in implants or other medical devices, including ceramics such as alumina and hydroxyapatitite; various metals such as stainl...

A novel nano-copper-bearing stainless steel with reduced Cu2+ release only inducing transient foreign body reaction via affecting the activity of NF-κB and Caspase 3

Foreign body reaction induced by biomaterials is a serious problem in clinical applications. Although 317L-Cu stainless steel (317L-Cu SS) is a new type of implant material with antibacterial ability and osteogenic property, the foreign body reaction level still needs to be assessed due to its Cu(2+) releasing property. For this purpose, two macrophage cell lines were selected to detect cellula...

Allergic reaction to stainless steel sternotomy wires requiring removal: A case report and literature review.

Hypersensitivity to stainless steel sternal sutures are an uncommon occurrence. We present a case of such a patient who developed chronic tissue overgranulation over a sternotomy wound eight weeks post-operatively. Primary suspicion was infection, a more common complication however radiological and laboratory investigation showed otherwise. Conservative management provided limited ephemeral suc...
